Current events, goings-on in Delaware and anything else of interest here.

As you probably already know, the News Journal prints -some- of the police calls in their police blotter section. I'm curious, where do they get the information? I'm asking because last night there were two separate exchanges of gunfire that were close enough that I could clearly make them out, and clearly make out at least two different weapons being fired. Obviously this information is available somewhere since the NJ is printing what they seem to deem acceptable or interesting, but where?

Ideas? I'm poking around the Wilmington Police website right now, but not finding anything incredibly useful.

Edit: Haven't found exactly what I'm looking for, but I did find a Delaware Crime Map which I found to be rather interesting.

Thanks,
Jim

My guess is that they use a police scanner. I have a friend at work that has his on all the time he's home. Lots of what happens never makes it to the paper.

Or they have a reporter that is assigned to cover just that area and is on good terms with the police. Usually they just report the arrests. Gunfire without someone being arrested isn't news worthy.

It is to me! :o :D

I figured as much, though.

Yeah? Do you know anything about it? I've thought for years that a scanner would be interesting. If it's not cost prohibitive then I'd consider getting one just for fun.

I don't haver much interest in it. But look here:

http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Un ... 20-000-000

Looks like you can get one for around $100-200.

or here:

Also found a live feed to your computer from the DSP - 911 calls

http://dsp.delaware.gov/

Link to the feed is in the left hand side --- 911 scanner only runs for an hour at a time but it's 'free'.

That's pretty cool.

New Castle County has their crime mapping online:

Keep in mind - that's only County stuff as far as I know. But it's still interesting (and even a little scary).

I rewrote the Delaware State Police RECOM audio feed a while back so there's no timer -- I used to listen to it at work when I got bored and needed a distraction while coding.. For the time being, you can access it here: http://tinyurl.com/6ym77t -- just navigate to the page and minimize it (it's otherwise blanks, but does play the audio).

You should also know that, when things get 'interesting', the police switch over to encrypted channels so they can't be monitored by public scanners. So, all you'll probably hear over this feed is, for the most part, standard calls and conversations.
