Since we live in southern Sussex County, we have OC'ed all over the beach areas from Fenwick to the boardwalk for 4+ years. We have never had a problem. You should see the looks that I get from the out-of-towners (New York, NJ, Canadians) when I am cruising down 113 or 1A while OC'ing on my motorcycle. The looks are priceless. :o

Went to La Tonalteca in Midway yesterday. Enjoyed lunch with the fam, no worries. Headed over to "Rehoboth Mall" afterwards, followed by a trip to Giant. No problems. (Although honestly, it sure seems like only spiders and mice are the regular tenants at the mall.)

Went up to Milford to see a new Chiropractor this afternoon, after the weekly trip to Greene Turtle in Lewes. One fellow lunch member compared notes with me about my Glock vs. the guns he carries (CCDW), and the Chiropractor asked about my spare mag. That's about the extent of that.

Visit to the doctor today to set up as a new patient, a family practice in the Five Points area. No problems there. Did the usual Greene Turtle Wednesday trip afterwards, and as usual, went just fine.

My first UNFRIENDLY encounter today.....

We went to the doctor's office, where my wife was getting set up for her next round of surgery. Keep in mind, I've already OC'd in there before. This time, as we were going back tot he room, I heard a doc talking to one of the nurses in a hushed tone something about "carrying."

I ignored it.

Shortly after we were in the room, our nurse left, but then returned, asking if I had something on my hip. Yes, I sure do.

"Is it a phone?" (Playing 20 questions I suppose.)

"No."

"It's a gun," my wife said.

"Hey, that's cool with me, I feel safer having you here with it."

So far, so good. However......

On the way out, I was confronted by the office manager, who asked if I was law enforcement.

"No."

"So, why are you carrying a gun?"

"Because it's my right, and I'm allowed to do so."

"I need to inform you that the next time you visit the office, you cannot bring that in here."

"OK, no problem. I understand, and I will make sure I let the community know that this is not a gun-friendly business." I said that part, turned, and continued to walk toward the front desk with my wife.

As we did our final formalities at the desk, the OM watched us, and we were basically watched by the rest of the staff like we were criminals.

But, it gets better.

As we were walking out, the OM followed us out the door.

"SIR! SIR! I just wanted to let you know that this has NOTHING to do with being gun friendly or not. We have sick patients in here, and the sight of a gun scares them."

(Me, only halfway turning back to her) - "Frankly ma'am, the comfort level of others is not really my concern when I carry. But I have made a note of this, and I will respect your request."

Continued walking to car, and left.

Went to Giant and Home Goods after that, and nobody ran away screaming. I suppose there were no sick patients in either place that were frightened by a properly holstered Glock 23.

A reasonable approach, and I hope you don't mind a suggestion based on my own plans if anyone ever speaks up about my open carry - I will ask 'do you think criminals will openly carry, or do you think they will respect your rules or the law?' no? Ok, then do you feel safer knowing that if a criminal attacks that there would not be someone to protect you? If someone does attack, who would you call? (someone with a gun)... Knowing that criminals ignore laws, do you still feel that taking away my right to defend myself makes me and you safer?

Or something along those lines. I will not just give in, and although I didn't mention it here, I will point out the USA and delaware constitution both support it.

If all else fails, I would warn them of impending negative publicity, but I view every interaction as an opportunity to educate, kindly.

Biggest problem is people won't respond to reason, and emotion rules their decision making process.

Rather than get into a debate with them, I bid the good day, and find somewhere else to spend my money. And report the incident to the community here

Hi Sean,

I also live in work in Sussex county and know the green turtle in Lewes very well. I work just down the street at the day care. Just wanted to say hey to a fellow Sussex countyer and as someone who is new to open carry (haven't had my first outing yet) was wondering if there are places i should stay away from. I work in Lewes but live in Prime Hook.

Just a simple observation on your approach.......as a OC or CCW law abiding citizen, it isn't your job nor is it even close to your lawful right to "protect someone else" should some criminal attack while you are out and about. If you were sitting inside that doctor's office and some thug came in with a gun and pointed it at the office manager and demanded money, you are not legally allowed to pull your weapon and act as law enforcement. Should the thug put your life in danger, now you have a completely different story. I'm bringing this to your attention simply so you understand that if you were to be in that situation and decided to take the law into your own hands, you would be treated like a criminal and would have to prove everything in court and would wind up in a world of problems. Let the LEO's take care of the general public, your concern is your own immediate safety and the safety of your family.

Jonnybow you might want to check 11 Del C. ยง465. Generally the restrictions are the same as defending yourself.
